    Attention Planet Earth

    Monday, November 28th, 2005

Tommarow you guys are moving to Wordpress 2 RC1. I’ve seen no problem, and i’m using multiple RC1 programs now, so why not? 1.5.2 is a little long in the tooth, and not as sleek and pretty as wp2. Why not? How many read this anyway? and how many care if it’s down for a few hours if i break it?

ooOOOHHH Even better! We’ll switch when we get th new icons. (we’ll see, i may get overly anxious to switch)

    Cool Program and other things

    Sunday, November 27th, 2005

    Copy your music, your way

To be accurate, iPodDisk isn’t a tool that copies songs from iPods; instead, it enables other applications to do so by emulating an iDisk drive. After iPodDisk starts, you just launch your favorite file-management tool and access your iPod as an iDisk.

So, this cool program is called iPodDisk. It’s a cool app for OS X that makes your hidden iPod files unhidden, and it does it in a really cool way: It makes the hidden folder a mounted network drive. It’s a really cool way to view your music files, and FREE(and did i mention cool? :-) )!

Also, i did a minor edit on the homepage: underneath the title of the posts theres the date and now the author name. This was something I wanted for a while, and now its working so happiness. I’ve been playing with wordpress 2 beta for a while, looks pretty cool. I’ll rolled it out on frayedwires when it’s final release, right now its somewhere hidden… Other site news: I want want NEED to fix the links so they aren’t having the bullets on them, we will see. Also, the other nathan is still working on a plethora of header and url images for us, can’t wait for them to be finished!

    Later all,

    Warning: Geek Ranting ahead

    Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005

…along with some news about random stuff
I just saw on a flickr picture that shows the new ipods don’t support firewire.
WHAT? Apple has just shot themselves in the foot if you ask me. They’ve just dropped THEIR OWN technology for something SLOWER. It’s utterly ridiculous. And I bet a quick firmware update from them would allow firewire, but the question is: will they? This has just gotten me jumping mad, can’t stand it

Moving on, There have been alot of posts recently. Check them out, don’t just read this one. There are fun ones and geeky ones alike. Next up, if the tech teacher can get an OK on it, me and Alex from the linux class may be making sites for some of the teachers at OHS. He thought that the one I made him was so good we could make some money by charging the others for it. He paid me, which I was totally unprepared for and thought he was crazy since i built that page out of sheer boredom. But all-in-all, turned out pretty good.

And in other news, if you want to be powered by Wordpress, the blog sofware I use, and don’t have a server or know how to do it, then sign up for Wordpress.com. It actually is a pretty nice admin interface, and a bunch of plugins and themes, all user created. It’s also extremly customizable, look at this page for example

and the web server seems to be slow. God, sometimes i wish i were back on the mindspring servers :-)

Well i’ll see you Vermonters around Christmas, and it will be fun. Later,

    Crazy xmas lights

Carson Williams from Mason, Ohio used 88 light-o-rama channels to control his 16,000 Christmas lights

    WinnaWannaWiki?

    Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

OOPS! I forgot about post 200 being supposedly special. I blew it on the Blue Ball Machine. Ah well, life goes on.

This will be the 200 post, the one that really matters. Now i’ve been playing with with this site for a while, and have a couple beta projects that i’ve been working on. I suppose i could release them to the public:

    • Gallery: A place to FINALLY put some pictures. You may remember my constant frustrations with it before, now i can do it the way i’ve always wanted to. with it
    • Wiki: Wiki’s are actually really cool; they allow anyone to add something to a page, and create their own pages. So go over their now and play around with it.(a not to the geekier of us: it doesn’t really use standard html, so look at the bottom for quick how-to’s on doing things)

So there you have it, people. Whatta you think? Comments have avatars too, so sign up for that when you sign up for your account to post comments on the blog.

    Blue Ball Machine

This thing is crazy! Be careful, this link could cause many hours of gawking and wasting of time figuring out how it works and watching all the sequences that is: The Blue Ball Machine

Note to self: Always have titles

    Friday, November 11th, 2005

Wordpress definetly wants titles for some of its features. I’ve added them all (just mostly by copy and paste of the first few words). The new archive page is some hack i found online. It’s actually really nice, i like it. And i like have the Last 5 Posts and Last 5 itunes songs i’ve listened to on the side. Soon to come: avatars for the rantings of youse people via gravatar.com(IT’S WORKING!!!)(sorry guys, it just didn’t want to behave, and its alot of work. I’ll leave it on the some day list) and a page of some of my favorite posts looking back. I’ve done alot of that because of tagging and titleing. I will be in future password protecting some posts that i don’t want completly out there, if you want to see them you’ll have to contact me for the password.

Well, the next post will be number 200 according to wordpress. So i think i’ll make it a good one, one that everyone will want to see. You’ll have to wait, till i post…

    hey, we’re live

    Tuesday, November 8th, 2005

Ladies and gentlemen, the new FrayedWires.com! We’re now hosted from a professional web hosting service, as apposed to mindspring. This gives me sooooo much i can do, and i will be. So, are you ready?

Also, if anyone has computer drawing capabilities, could they make an icon that shows up in the Address field? Right now its this:
A random M; who knows why?

It should be a 16×16 in the end, but i’d suggest using a 64×64 then scaling it down. Send me your submissions via email. Don’t know my email? ask me on aim. dont know my aim? your outta luck, ive gotten a little stingy with privacy. post them in comments maybe. Yes, and i will be open to suggestions on changings in the template, and i will be changing the archive format.

    The Sony/BMG Fiasco

    Saturday, November 5th, 2005

Sony/BMG(the record company) has overstepped their boundries with some of the latest cds they’ve released. In an attempt to “protect their rights,” Sony has put whats know as a rootkit on these cds that’s installed when you accept the liscense agreement that pops up when you stick the cd in your drive. Rootkits hide files that (normally) hackers put on machines so they can’t be found or removed by antispyware or antivirus applications.
What’s worse is the poor coding in their application. This rootkit could make YOU a hacker. Why? All you have to do if your already infested with this nuisance is put $sys$ at the beginning of a file name and the file disappears. Nothing can find it, nothing can see it. It’s ridiculous. I’m all for protecting the files you created, but you have to do it wisely. Sony’s program slows down your machine cause it tries to look for its protection 8 times every 2 seconds, and it creates a big security risk by allowing any file with $sys$ at the beginning of the name to become invisible to the OS and it’s applications.
So, be careful. If you have a Sony/BMG CD and it says something along the lines of “enhanced cd content” or “enhanced to protect our music” DON’T play it in a Windows computer.

**UPDATE: I’ve just seen an article that says at least some of these Sony/BMG Discs do the same thing on a mac. The thing is, you’d have to type your password for it to install. Just be careful about strange apps trying to install.**
